The Mercedes-Benz W166 marked the second generation of the brand's modern luxury SUV, replacing the W164 in 2011. Initially sold as the M-Class (ML), it was renamed GLE following its 2015 facelift, aligning with Mercedes-Benz's updated naming strategy.

Compared to its predecessor, the W166 featured a lighter chassis, improved refinement, updated technology, and a broader range of efficient petrol and diesel engines. Buyers could choose from rear-wheel drive in selected markets or Mercedes' 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system, while the lineup ranged from economical four-cylinder diesels to powerful V8-powered AMG models.

Throughout its production, the W166 was available in a wide variety of standard, metallic, Designo, and AMG-exclusive paint finishes, making it one of Mercedes-Benz's more diverse color palettes of the 2010s. Popular choices included Obsidian Black, Iridium Silver, Selenite Grey, Cavansite Blue, Lunar Blue, and Diamond White, alongside numerous Designo colors for customers seeking a more exclusive specification.

Production ended in 2019 when the W166 was succeeded by the W167 GLE, which continued the model's focus on combining luxury, practicality, and long-distance comfort.
